As you probably know by now, I’ve been collaborating and lifting Finnish designers and brands because I find it important to take a closer look at what we have around us. I love to build a relationship towards the people behind my clothes. That way, getting dressed becomes even more meaningful and important. How we dress can wether we like it or not be used and compared to the language we speak. That’s just the reality and I like to take control over it and raise awareness. It’s a form of self expression and speed communication.

Gowns and overalls were the first things that came to my mind when I first familiarized myself with Katri Niskanen and her designs. I’ve come to learn that the brand have a wide selection including everything from coats (this one f.eg.) , leggings, silk blouses, casual dresses and knits. Sculptural draping’s and versatility in her clothes is how I would define her style, as well as loyalty towards her brand. Being true to oneself style- wise is what I admire most in all of my sources of inspiration. It gives an impression of certainty in taste, which is both sexy and appealing.

For this post I wanted to feature two of my favorite dresses by Kati Niskanen. Both suitable for upcoming winter parties. This white draped mini would be my pick for New Years Eve, since I always prefer to wear white for that celebration, but this black gown is the perfect investment if you want to own one gown for the rest of your life. It’s so flattering and comfortable on the body and falls beautifully with every step you take.

This time I teamed up with Katri for a chance to take a closer look at the brand and it’s history. Katri herself is an entrepreneur, mother and creative soul. A cocktail of everything I admire and look up to. So, I wanted to hear about her style philosophy and simply get to know her a little bit better.

How did it all start? KN: I was born in Northern Finland in the middle of nature. Nature has always inspired and fascinated me and I’ve been sewing clothes since I was six years old. Creativity and self-expression has always been a big part of me, but the passion for fashion design was something that slowly grew on me beside my interest for art.

Miten ja mistä kaikki alkoi? KN:Synnyin ja kasvoin Pohjois-Suomessa, luonnon keskellä. Luonto on aina inspiroinut ja kiehtonut minua. Rakastin jo lapsena vaatteita ja ompelua. Olen ommellut ja harrastanut kuvataiteita 6-vuotiaasta asti. Luovuus ja itsensäilmaisu on aina ollut minulle tärkeää. Palo muotisuunnitteluun on syntynyt pikkuhiljaa muiden taideharrastusten ohella ja päätin lukion jälkeen lähteä opiskelemaan muotoilua ja vaatesuunnittelua.

What made you launch your own brand? Katri Niskanen the brand was established in 2010. KN: Although I had been working for other companies I always dreamt of having my own collection. After winning the tv-show Project Runway in 2009 I took the given opportunity and created my brand with my own designs

Mikä sai sinut perustamaan oman vaatemerkin? KN: Haave omasta mallistosta oli aina ollut olemassa, myös silloin kun olen työskennellyt muille yrityksille. Voitettuani Muodin Huipulle -tv-ohjelman (Project Runway) 2009, sain hyvän ponnahduslaudan hypätä tuntemattomaan ja perustaa oman yrityksen. Halusin luoda omaehtoisesti vaatteita, oman näkemykseni mukaan. Se oli ja on todella palkitsevaa ja vie mukanaan.

What is the message you want to communicate with your brand? KN: Versatility and timelessness is important. I don’t want to make pieces that get worn once or twice. Instead I want my pieces to last both in time and quality. I want to make clothes that become the go-to pieces in the wardrobe and makes a woman feel confident and comfortable

Mitä tahdot viestittää suunnittelemillasi vaatteilla? KN:Ajattomuus ja monikäyttöisyys ovat tärkeää nykypäivänä; en halua luoda kertakäyttövaatteita, vaan haluan, että asut kestävät käyttöä ja aikaa. Kuulen usein, että vaatteeni ovat vaatekaapin pelastajia – niistä löytyy lukuisia luottomekkoja, -haalareita, -jakkuja jne. Ne ovat täydellisiä myös matkoilla. Kun on hyvä olla vaatteessa tilanteessa kuin tilanteessa, se antaa itsevarmuutta ja tekee kantajastaan entistä kauniimman

After this food filled weekend of mine, I thought I’d stay on the subject and share this short interview from Elle magazine, where I talk about my eating habits and way of looking at things regarding food. The interview is in finnish and because I prefer to leave the texts I borrow untouched, I didn’t translate it.

Juon päivässä noin viisi litraa vettä, mikä on varmaan liikaa, mutta himoitsen sitä jatkuvasti. Saan helposti päänsäryn, jos juon vähemmän. Alkoholia en juo juuri lainkaan, koska en siedä hiprakkaista tunnetta, jonka muutama huikka alkoholia saa aikaan.

Haluaisin oppia tykkäämään leipomisesta, sillä toivon, että voisin tarjota puolitoistavuotiaalle tyttärelleni pullantuoksuisen kodin. Nyt leivon vain, kun on pakko. Ihanin jälkkäri on mansikkakakku, koska se tuo mieleen kesän.

Ruokatrendit ovat ärsyttäviä. Ensin pitää olla vegetaristi, sitten karpata ja yhtäkkiä kaikki ovat keliaakikkoja. Olisi hienoa, jos ihmiset voisivat olla lempeitä itseään kohtaan ja pysähtyä kuuntelemaan omaa kehoaan, vaikka se ei ole helppoa.

En ole lainkaan rasvaisen ruoan perään. Muuten olen lähes kaikkiruokainen, ainoastaan selleristä ja greipistä en pidä. Syön kaikkea, mitä minulle tarjotaan, koska ruoassa on kyse muustakin kuin ravinnosta. Yhdessä syöminen on tärkeää.

Olen hulluna smoothieihin, niin kliseistä kuin se onkin. Teen tyttärelleni ja itselleni juoman joka päivä. Heitän blenderiin esimerkiksi kurkkua, banaania, kiiviä, sitruunaa ja avokadoa. Syön joka päivä suklaata, mutta en pidä sitä paheena. Neljä palaa päivässä riittää. Lemppareitani ovat Fazerin sininen ja Maraboun appelsiinikrokantti. Säilytän suklaani pakkasessa, koska silloin rakenne on kivan loksahtava.

Tänään söin muroja ja jogurttia, katkarapuvihannespataa ja täysjyväriisiä, salaattia, vihersmoothien, juustonäkkileipiä, kananmunia, omenoita maapähkinävoilla ja tietenkin muutaman palan suklaata.
